Blizzard has announced a restructuring of the Heroes of the Storm development team. Some members of the Heroes of the Storm team are being reassigned to other projects, Blizzard said in an announcement. Blizzard is also not going to bring back the game’s two esports series next year. Those being the Heroes Global Championship, and Heroes of the Dorm series. This sounds an awful lot like entering maintenance mode, a stage that most live service games inevitably reach. For its part, Blizzard said that work continues on new content such as new characters, and events. The cadence of these updates, however, will be slower than it is today. “Ultimately, we’re setting up the game for long-term sustainability. We’re so grateful for the support the community has shown from the beginning, and the development team will continue to support Heroes with the same passion, dedication, and creativity that has made the game such a unique experience,” a message by … [Read more...] about Blizzard takes developers off Heroes of the Storm, cancels 2019 esports calendar
EA has long-term plans for Anthem and so does BioWare, there won’t be any Anthem 2 because the studio’s focus is on live-services. Speaking with GameInformer, executive producer Mark Darrah stated that Anthem is a live-service game and they have no plans for Anthem 2. Anthem is releasing early next year and is one of the biggest games ever made by EA. It wouldn’t be wrong to say it is make or break for BioWare. It is important that BioWare has a strong foundation with Anthem and build on it for years to come. BioWare plans to support Anthem with post-release content for years. However, Bungie had similar plans for Destiny but the first game didn’t do as well as Activision would have hoped. It died after a couple of years due to lack of content in the base game and most of it being locked behind paid DLCs and expansions. But BioWare recently explained how Anthem is different from Destiny. When asked how he feels about comparisons with Destiny, game director … [Read more...] about BioWare Has No Plans for Anthem 2, Focus Is On Long-Term Live Service
Blizzard is cutting back on Heroes of the Storm - shrinking the game's team and cancelling its big esports events. Staff will be moved to other internal projects, Blizzard said in a blog post today. There's no word on how many people will be left working on the MOBA. Blizzard said it was a hard choice - repeatedly, using the phrases "very difficult decision", "tough choice", and "we don't make these decisions lightly" - but the game's staff were now needed elsewhere. "We now have more live games and unannounced projects than at any point in the company's history," Blizzard said in a statement signed by new boss J. Allen Brack and creative chief Ray Gresko. "We're also at a point where we need to take some of our talented developers and bring their skills to other projects. "As a result, we've made the difficult decision to shift some developers from Heroes of the Storm to other teams, and we're excited to see the passion, knowledge, and experience that they'll bring to those … [Read more...] about Blizzard downsizes Heroes of the Storm team, cancels esports plans
I had a fine time with Mutant Year Zero: Road To Eden‘s post-apocalyptic, ducking good blend of real-time stealth and turn-based combat, but one concern dogged me throughout. Used repeatedly throughout the game are two beyond-familiar terms: ‘zone’ and ‘Stalker.’ Names scorched into the very soul of anyone who’s played the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games/seen Tarkovsky’s Stalker/read Roadside Picnic. How what why? I asked Mutant Year Zero’s developers to explain this anomaly. (And then I spent far too long researching the Swedish release dates of cult 1970s sci-fi). In terms of its theme (mutants battling through a post-disaster world) developers The Bearded Ladies shrug off the legendary noughties survival-shooter series as an inspiration. “We have seen a few people accuse us of just being a copy of Stalker,” game director Lee Varley tells me, “but the original Pen and Paper was written back in 1984 where this type of post … [Read more...] about Why does Mutant Year Zero use the terminology of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.?
