Upon seeing Anthem earlier this year at E3, myself and fellow DualShockers staff writer Michael Ruiz left our demo and felt completely at ease when it came to any concerns we may have had on the gameplay front. The controls felt responsive, shooting had a nice kick to it, and flying around the world was just as awesome as I had hoped. Above all else, I knew that I didn’t need to worry about many issues involving Anthem‘s gameplay any longer. Instead, the larger concern I had about Anthem dealt with that of its story, an aspect that I rarely have daunting anxiety about when it comes to BioWare games. With Anthem being a shared-world shooter in the same vein as something like Destiny, I had a feeling that storytelling would take a back seat this time around, which is not something I wanted to see from a studio with the narrative pedigree of BioWare. This was a sentiment that another one of our writers, Ryan Meitzler, brought … [Read more...] about Despite BioWare’s Insisting, I Still Have Doubts About Anthem’s Storytelling Potential
Destiny, a shared world first-person shooter MMORPG, that was once marketed as the “Call of Duty killer.” Simply because this was something new, massive in size, and Call of Duty was really struggling with its audience at the time. But soon after its release, we all realized that the only thing Destiny would kill is our trust in Bungie, the creator of the highly popular Halo franchise. The general lack of content mixed with Activision’s attempts to milk it for years with paid expansions and in-game purchases within a $60 AAA game meant people would look at these practices, and be skeptical of Destiny 2. But when the sequel came we saw an excitement among the community, there was more to Destiny now. A brand new clan system, new subclass system, new raids, strikes, better bur short story, more multiplayer modes, but still not enough to justify that $60 price tag. It was a shame, a serious disappointment and while Forsaken has improved things in terms of … [Read more...] about Attention All Destiny Players, Are You Guys Excited for Bioware’s Anthem?
After the disappointing reception of Mass Effect: Andromeda, news of BioWare’s upcoming new IP Anthem has been tentatively received. Despite promising to “retain the heart and soul of a BioWare experience” more details have emerged about Anthem that place it about as far away from the narrative-driven, romance-heavy tales we’re used to. Anthem loot system will be biased to the type of Javelin you are using which makes sense since players won’t be able to trade loot with each other. BioWare’s Mark Durrah confirmed this on Twitter when a fan asked about the loot system. He further explained that Anthem loot system doesn’t only drop loot useful for your Javelin but other random stuff as well. Other random stuff will be tradeable at vendors and may also be used for other Javelins you may control. Anthem loot system is different from what we have seen in The Division but which allows you to trade loot and often items you get are more useful to your teammates than you. But we will get a better idea of how it works when the beta rolls out. According to BioWare, the beta will be held early next year. The beta feedback will be used to improve the game in the following months, post-launch. BioWare is trying to deliver a complete package. You would be able to play for months and months. Even if we weren’t … [Read more...] about Anthem Loot System is Biased to Your Javelin
