MSI hope to “redefine the gaming SSD” with their two TLC-based drives, offering top read and write speeds of 7000MB/s and 6900MB/s and maximum capacities up to 4TB. Alas, that was the extent of what MSI revealed during their press conference, so we don’t yet know how these drives will differ from each other, how much they’re going to cost, or when we’ll be able to get our hands on them. However, we can see from the images that both look like they’ve got quite substantial heatsinks attached to them, probably ruling out any hopes of being able to stick them in your PS5. … [Read more...] about MSI have announced their first SSDs, and they’re incredibly fast

Samsung unveils 870 EVO SSDs, which are about as good as SATA drives are going to get
The Samsung 870 EVO uses the company's latest V-NAND flash memory and controller to make for an up-to-date SSD that is manufactured completely in-house. The drives employ a variable SLC buffer using Samsung's Intelligent TurboWrite tech to maintain peak performance. Overall, you're looking at reads and writes of 560MB/s and 530MB/s respectively, which are right up against the limits of the 6Gbps SATA interface. You're looking at random read and write IOPS of 98K and 88K as well, by the way. … [Read more...] about Samsung unveils 870 EVO SSDs, which are about as good as SATA drives are going to get
Kingston’s Ghost Tree is a surprisingly cool name for a next-gen 7,000MB/s SSD
Kingston has announced that it has a next-gen PCIe 4.0 SSD on the way. Not only that, but it has a surprisingly cool codename as well, Ghost Tree. Mysterious. SSDs aren't usually the type of thing to get cool codenames, but maybe their improving position in the world is behind the shift. … [Read more...] about Kingston’s Ghost Tree is a surprisingly cool name for a next-gen 7,000MB/s SSD
Xbox Series X/S 1TB expandable storage costs $220
"A significant portion of the overall size of a game is comprised of texture data," Ronald continues. "As Xbox Series S was designed with a performance target of 1440p at 60 FPS with support for up to 120 FPS, many games will not require their highest level of 4K textures resulting in smaller game sizes overall, often up to 30 per cent smaller on average." … [Read more...] about Xbox Series X/S 1TB expandable storage costs $220
There’s no reason to settle for a small capacity SSD when this 1TB model is just $79
In this case, Team Group's drive pairs 64-layer 3D triple-level cell (TLC) NAND memory chips (boosted with SLC caching) with Silicon Motion's SM2258XT controller, to deliver up to 560MB/s of sequential read performance and 520MB/s of sequential write performance. … [Read more...] about There’s no reason to settle for a small capacity SSD when this 1TB model is just $79
