New People Make Games Video Examines How Big Publishers Exploit Outside Labor

Video games are massive undertakings for any company these days, and while one primary developer works on the main part of a game, it's not uncommon for it to outsource work to another studio across the world. YouTube channel People Make Games has highlighted this practice, which unsurprisingly reveals that many of these satellite game development studios force its employees to endure brutal levels of crunch. People Make Games host Chris Bratt spoke to 19 current and former developers across two Southeast Asian studios, discovering that the games industry continues to profit from a huge amount of unpaid labor. Employees were working 70-hour weeks while only being paid for 40 of those hours, often spending late nights at their workstations and clocking in on weekends to meet unrealistic deadlines. As for why anyone would commit to such brutal periods of crunch, the employees interviewed explained that they were hoping that their efforts would allow them to land jobs at … [Read more...] about New People Make Games Video Examines How Big Publishers Exploit Outside Labor

Valheim World Generator makes it easy to find your perfect Viking paradise

If you've ever wanted to shop for the perfect Valheim world seed before committing to a server, Unity tinkerer wd40bomber7 has created the perfect tool for you: the (unofficial) Valheim World Generator . You can try the browser tool for yourself for free, as our friends at PC Gamer spotted. Simply put, it uses Valheim world seeds to generate a preview of possible game worlds. There are toggleable markers for bosses, camps, the trader, troll caves, and other loot and landmarks, so if you care more about getting resources than the spirit of exploration, you can essentially map out most of your world. Militsioner wants to make you feel like you’re “playing against a real giant policeman” in its immersive escape simulator

A uniformed policeman sits wistfully in the centre of a provincial Russian town, his arms folded on one knee in a position resembling that of a bored child confined to the naughty step after a particularly egregious tantrum. You'd think his occupation would require him to adopt a more alert, focused posture, but that's hardly necessary for this authority figure. You see, the police officer in question is at least ten stories tall, and thus more than capable of watching over the entire town from the comfort of his reclined position. Should anything catch his attention, he's one stride away from quite literally stepping in. This is the world in which Militsioner takes place, and it's your job to escape it. "There is no specific source," says game designer Dmitry Shevchenko of Militsioner's inspirations. "The idea of the game was born organically in the process of development, though we relied on literary references like Trial by Franz Kafka and Crime and Punishment by Fyodor … [Read more...] about Militsioner wants to make you feel like you’re “playing against a real giant policeman” in its immersive escape simulator

Dota 2’s tutorial sucks, so Dota 2 players are spending $25,000 to make a new one

It's a perennial joke in the Dota 2 community that the last tutorial started with the objective to buy a Stout Shield—an item that was removed from the game three weeks later. Dota 2 is a game that regularly reinvents huge parts of itself with massive shakeups like the late 2019 Outlanders patch , and what tutorials once existed quickly became loaded with outdated mechanics and inaccuracies. Since the Stout Shield fiasco, a tutorial has been all but written off as impossible or even undesirable: Most Dota players just learn from an internet personality or are roped in by friends who teach them the game. That said, the lack of a good tutorial has been a surprising hole in one of the PC's most popular games, and it's something that's in the forefront of some Dota players' minds as the release of a high-profile Dota 2 anime spin-off on Netfli x approaches, an event that could draw a surge of new players. Either in anticipation or reaction, The Witcher 3's average concurrent … [Read more...] about Dota 2’s tutorial sucks, so Dota 2 players are spending $25,000 to make a new one

Warframe is reworking its Railjack mode to make it faster and easier to get into

A massive Warframe Railjack rework is coming, bringing some of the biggest changes to the game's core systems in its eight-year history. The changes are set to arrive as the main event of Warframe Update 29.10.0, headed first to PC "within the next week or two," according to developer Digital Extremes . The changes touch nearly every part of the Railjack experience which first launched back in December 2019 . If you're not familiar with the concept, it's basically Sea of Thieves in space, but with magic biomechanical space ninjas instead of pirates. For starters, it's going to be a whole lot easier just to make a Railjack ship and start flying: the resources required to craft one will be significantly reduced, and the revised Crew system will let you fill empty squad slots with NPCs if you prefer to fly solo (if you already spent a bunch of time building and upgrading ships before, you'll likely be eligible for an early adopter bonus). While Railjacks were previously … [Read more...] about Warframe is reworking its Railjack mode to make it faster and easier to get into
