Update: GameStop's stock is on the rise once again. Following the news of CFO Jim Bell's impending departure from the company, the company's stock price remain largely unchanged over the course of today, February 24. However, before market close, it spiked from the mid-$40 range to almost $92--roughly a 100% increase. In after hours trading, that's risen even further, standing at over $118 at the time of this writing. Perhaps coincidentally, other stocks that were targeted by Reddit's WallStreetBets subreddit, such as AMC, have also seen a spike to end the day. Whether that's a coincidence or not, Reddit--the entire site, not just the WSB subreddit--is down. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is celebrating this week's launch of Bravely Default II with a new Spirit Board event. The event kicks off at 10 PM PT tomorrow, February 25, and introduces the four Heroes of Light from Square Enix's newest Switch RPG as Spirits. The heroes are paired up to make two different Spirits: Seth & Gloria and Elvis & Adelle. Each of those will appear periodically on the Spirit Board throughout the event. You'll also earn extra Spirit Points each time you defeat the new Bravely Default Spirits. The event runs until 10 PM PT on March 2. Bravely Default II launches for Switch on February 26. Despite the number in its title, it's actually the third proper installment in its series thus far, following the original Bravely Default and its sequel, Bravely Second. Despite GameStop's stock being driven as high as $483 a share in the wild Reddit-fueled rally at the end of January , the retailer itself was poorly positioned to take advantage of the unprecedented event. The company was unable to sell off any stock when prices peaked due to regulatory concerns, according to sources cited by Reuters . Theoretically, GameStop could have raised much-needed revenue through a stock sale when its stock peaked at over $400 a share, raising revenue towards its $216 million debt and investing in an ecommerce pivot--but it didn't. Sources familiar with the matter said that GameStop explored the possibility of selling off stock during the rally, but ultimately decided not to. Square Enix's line of retro JRPGs continues with an all-new world and tale for Bravely Default, though some of the old problems persist. Sometimes, there's nothing quite so reassuring as a good old JRPG. This is a comfort blanket of a genre for players of a certain age, games that happily consume entire lazy afternoons curled up on a sofa as you slowly push numbers ever upwards.
