Where have all the survival horror games gone?
During a ‘Making Of’ documentary for his most recent game--The Evil Within--veteran developer Shinji Mikami said a curious thing: “There aren’t any real survival horror games in the world right now”. The man who created Resident Evil 4 thinks horror games have become “all action”, and that, with his first game from his new Tango Gameworks studio, he's motivated to create a pure survival horror game. And that got us thinking. Where have all the survival horror games gone?A large part of us agrees with Mikami--games like Dead Space 3 and Resident Evil 5 & 6 have taken the survival horror genre, loaded it up with as many guns as it can carry, and told it to start shooting. Sure the shocks and scares are still present, but much of the psychological menace has drained away from them. Quite simply, when you’ve been given enough ammo and firepower to level a small European nation, there’s little reason to run away. In fact, ask … [Read more...] about Where have all the survival horror games gone?
10 origin story games you didn’t know you wanted
Humble beginningsReimagined origin stories are the new hotness. Tomb Raider, God of War: Ascension, DmC: Devil May Cry, Gears of War: Judgment--they all offer a look into the earlier days of the characters weve already grown attached to, with the opportunity for some retconned lore or nuanced character development. Also, its just plain cool to see your favorite current-day heroes before their rise to greatness, when they were fledgling adventurers or ordinary citizens. With that in mind, weve pondered which characters we think should get the origin story treatment, and what the games they star in could possibly depict. Even if they drastically change our perceptions of protagonists we already know and love, these hypothetical reboots could give their franchise a real shot in the arm for a new generation of gamers. Or not--but we can dream, cant we?Garrus Vakarian, C-Sec detectiveHe helped put away Saren and save the entire universe from the wrath of the Reapers--but there was a time … [Read more...] about 10 origin story games you didn’t know you wanted
A full collection of Artifact cards now reportedly costs around $40
One of Valve’s riskier decisions with Artifact was to tie its cards to the Steam Marketplace. When the game launched, it was possible to buy every card you needed to complete your collection that way, but getting your hands on the most sought-after rare cards was an expensive proposition, with certain heroes costing nearly $20. But markets rise and fall, and now you can get a complete set of Artifact cards for around $40.In fact, the cost of a full collection of Artifact cards has recently dipped below $40 for the first time, according to a site called How Much Does Artifact Cost that tracks current card prices and adds them up. For one of each hero card and three of everything else, the price at the time of this writing is $40.64. For May 9, the average price for a full collection was $39.15.Again, these figures are aggregated from current prices on the Steam Marketplace, which of course means individual cards are getting cheaper. When we rounded up Artifact’s most … [Read more...] about A full collection of Artifact cards now reportedly costs around $40
Twitch’s Artifact category has become a wasteland of porn, memes, and worse
The collapse of Valve's CCG Artifact was remarkable enough in itself, but it's had an unexpected side effect on Twitch. The Artifact category was effectively abandoned to become a digital wasteland, almost entirely devoid of viewers. Nobody was paying attention—and as so often happens when nobody's looking, somebody started causing trouble. The category was—and is—filled with streams, but virtually none of them are actually related to Artifact. Instead, it's everything but, including porn, because there's always porn. Disturbingly, video of the mass murder at a mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand ran for more than 30 minutes before finally being pulled, according to esports consultant Rod Breslau.okay WTF twitchWARNING: the new zealand mosque massacre is being streamed in full in the artifact section to 3,000 viewers for over 20 minutes now pic.twitter.com/N39CXVkNlTMay 27, 2019"Over the weekend we became aware of a number of accounts targeting the Artifact game … [Read more...] about Twitch’s Artifact category has become a wasteland of porn, memes, and worse
