Stylish JRPG Cris Tales hits PC in July

Cris Tales seems to have a lot of what you'd expect from a JRPG: turn-based combat, very dramatic voice acting, and a seemingly inexplicable name. But it's also distinctive enough to warrant attention, with its gorgeous hand-drawn art style and time-bending approach to combat. Initially scheduled to release in November last year, Cris Tales now has a July 20 release date. The time manipulation stuff sounds pretty cool: protagonist Crisbell can warp between past, present and future, and combat plays out differently depending on which one you're in. Back in October a spokesperson for studio Dreams Uncorporated said that developing Cris Tales is like "developing three different videogames at the same time." It definitely looks like an ambitious effort for a small studio. When it lands in July it'll do so on the Epic Games Store and all the consoles (even Stadia). … [Read more...] about Stylish JRPG Cris Tales hits PC in July

Netflix’s Chadwick Boseman documentary is coming to the streamer for a limited time

Chadwick Boseman's acting career will be celebrated in a new Netflix documentary. Dropping this weekend, Chadwick Boseman: Portrait of an Artist will only be available to stream for 30 days. The actor, known for playing T'Challa in the MCU, died from colon cancer in August 2020. He's the favorite to win Best Actor at the Oscars this year for his performance in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom , his last role before his death – he's only the seventh actor to ever be posthumously nominated for an acting Academy Award. He's already earned Best Actor wins at the Golden Globes (making him the first Black actor to win the gong posthumously), the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Gotham Awards, and the Critics' Choice Awards. The documentary will feature a host of famous faces, including Viola Davis, Boseman's co-star in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, his Black Panther co-star Danai Gurira, and Spike Lee, who directed Boseman in his Vietnam War drama Da 5 Bloods . The actor never … [Read more...] about Netflix’s Chadwick Boseman documentary is coming to the streamer for a limited time

What a Last of Us PS5 remake could learn from Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, and more to justify its own existence

Rumors that a Last of Us PS5 remake is in the works at Naughty Dog have been met with a mixed reception, and it's not hard to see why. The idea of one of Sony's most revered first-party studios being put to work on a remake of a game that came out just eight years ago gives the image of PlayStation playing it safe and self-satisfied at the beginning of a new-generation – a perception worryingly familiar for those of us who remember the early years of the PS3's life cycle. Admittedly, there is some business sense in a Last of Us remake, if indeed the reports are true. With The Last of Us TV show coming up, sales data suggesting the majority of PS5 purchasers have never owned a PlayStation console before , and a potential PC port of The Last of Us Part 2 looking more likely than ever, Sony is about to introduce a vast new audience to one of its biggest first-party franchises. What better way to acclimate and onboard these players than with a remake catching them up on the … [Read more...] about What a Last of Us PS5 remake could learn from Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, and more to justify its own existence

Fruit Ninja+ is as wonderful as it always was

Let us now praise the poets of the watermelon. There is Frida Kahlo, who arranged them like architecture, a strange city of watermelons, one particular example etched with the words, Viva La Vida, a sentiment so joyous not even Coldplay could ruin it. There is Ricky Jay, the conjurer, actor, writer, historian of magic, who could fling playing cards with such deadly speed that their 52 polite razor edges would pierce the thick, "pachydermous hide" of "his majesty", shining and green on Broadway or on the set of the Johnny Carson show. And now we must add Fruit Ninja. A hush and that hollow popping noise, a T-shirt cannon has fired off-screen and then the watermelon is tumbling before us. "His majesty" is not the half of it. Are we in space? Are we orbiting, circling, caught in some endless Kubrick freefall, upwards and around? Behold nature's panzered blimp: its outside speaks of snakes and camouflage and armour. Its inside, once the blade has sung and fairly scorched the mineral air, … [Read more...] about Fruit Ninja+ is as wonderful as it always was
