A new Paper Mario speedrun world record has been reached, and it's all thanks to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Don't worry, it will make sense in a minute. Speedrunner JCog posted the new 54 minute and 22-second record video along with an explanation of what the hell is happening on Pastebin . Here's the basic setup: speedrunners recently discovered a glitch that would let them overwrite parts of Paper Mario's game code as it ran, enabling what the community calls arbitrary code execution or ACE. Unfortunately, accessing that glitch with just a copy of Paper Mario and your controller requires impossibly precise inputs. It turns out there's another way, thanks to a previously known Ocarina of Time glitch and the magic of the Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak. Here's the top-level explanation from JCOG: "We're using ACE in OoT to write code to memory that we can reach with a glitch in Paper Mario after quickly swapping cartridges, and then that code lets us write more … [Read more...] about Paper Mario speedrunner uses an Ocarina of Time glitch to set a new record

Bungie’s Trademark For “BungieCon” Has Resurfaced
A trademark that Bungie originally filed in 2020 is making the rounds again this week, prompting speculation that the Destiny studio may have plans for its own convention. Bungie's trademark for "BungieCon," which was originally filed in summer 2020 , covers all manner of products, including jewellery, trading cards, pants, and boots, along with something more befitting its name. The Goods & Services description states that BungieCon could apply to the "organizing and conducting [of] fan conventions in the fields of video and computer games." The connection people are making here is that Bungie has plans to hold its own fan convention. This potential idea is further bolstered by the news back in 2017 that Bungie had trademarked "DestinyCon." If Bungie is indeed planning a fan convention, that might explain the other Goods & Services descriptions for things like jewellery, trading cards, and clothing. It's not uncommon for those types of things to be sold at a … [Read more...] about Bungie’s Trademark For “BungieCon” Has Resurfaced
Bungie Confirms New IP To Launch By 2025 And Plans To Expand Destiny Into “Additional Media”
Destiny developer Bungie has big plans for the future. The company has re-confirmed its plans to launch its mysterious new IP by 2025, while the company is expanding the physical size of its Bellevue, Washington office and opening a brand-new publishing outfit in Amsterdam. Additionally, Bungie has teased plans to extend the Destiny franchise beyond games, while there has been a leadership shakeup on the development team as well. New IP Bungie said it plans to launch a new IP before 2025, but nothing is known about this game. In 2018, the Chinese internet company invested $100 million into Bungie to help the company make non-Destiny games, so this new IP might be one of them. Bungie CEO Pete Parsons first mentioned his hope of releasing the new, non-Destiny IP by 2025 back in 2019, but this is the first time Bungie is cementing that hope in writing. Bungie has promoted Jonny Ebbert to chief creative officer and Zach Russell to general manager of incubation to work on … [Read more...] about Bungie Confirms New IP To Launch By 2025 And Plans To Expand Destiny Into “Additional Media”
Paper Mario Speedrunner Skips Straight To Credits With Help From Ocarina Of Time
A Paper Mario speedrunner named JCog has now beaten the game in less than an hour via a new strategy that requires the use of an entirely different game cartridge: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time . The runner managed this feat on only his second formal attempt, though he streamed for several hours beforehand practicing the strategy. JCog's time of 54:22 would be a new "any-percent" world record for the game. However, it's not likely to top the official Speedrun.com leaderboards anytime soon, though it may become its own category extension. That's because the strategy requires memory manipulation through the use of a Japanese Ocarina of Time cartridge, which is usually not allowed in vanilla speedruns. As JCog explains in a lengthy Pastebin , the runner uses a series of exploits across both games that allow you to execute save file names as code. These exploits were discovered and developed by several people in the Paper Mario speedrunning community, including Rain, … [Read more...] about Paper Mario Speedrunner Skips Straight To Credits With Help From Ocarina Of Time
Here are the classes losing the most with Hearthstone’s Core Set changes
The Year of the Gryphon looks set to be a helluva time for Hearthstone players, kicking off with some of the biggest changes ever to happen to the game landing simultaneously. We're just weeks away from the first expansion of 2021 , and the current format that we've grown accustomed to over the past seven years is about to ripped up and reformed. When that happens, the Standard mode will include the new (and free) Core set, Year of the Phoenix expansions, plus this year's upcoming expansions. Meanwhile. Wild will gain the Legacy set (Basic and Classic, some of which have been un-nerfed, and the Hall of Fame cards), as well as all the other cards from old expansions and adventures. You can see exactly which 235 cards comprise the Core set here . It's a mix of returning favourites from Wild, some entirely new designs, and old Basic and Classic cards which survived the cut—in some cases they've even been buffed. That means we have some tough goodbyes ahead of us when … [Read more...] about Here are the classes losing the most with Hearthstone’s Core Set changes
