What's is the most famous computer of all time? Sure, HAL's going to be up there, but thankfully that murderous slice of silicon is purely a work of fiction. We have, however, uncovered a way to definitively state which real-life computer is the most famous, by virtue of how much screen time a given device might have got in its lifetime. But fame can be a fickle thing. One minute you're some fȇted Hollywood starlet, the next you're relegated to the scrapheap of history, and because we can't just sit around watching endless hours of Netflix for a hint of a keyboard we need some repository of computing fame. Thankfully I just stumbled upon StarringtheComputer . It's a brilliant resource for anyone wondering where each of their favourite computers starred in media productions. Not only does the site include endless lists of shows and movies with computers in them, for each one there are also screenshots of its airtime, and a short overview of its role in the production. The site … [Read more...] about We’ve figured out the most famous computer of all time. And no, its not an Apple device

AMD, Nvidia, and Intel urge Biden to salvage the US chip industry
It's no secret the semiconductor industry is under pressure. Countless manufacturers are having trouble meeting the increased demands of the market at the moment. In a bid to rectify this, or at least get on the right path, the SIA (Semiconductor Industry Association) has constructed a compelling letter to newly inaugurated US President Biden, urging his hand on the matter. The letter has been signed not only by Lisa Su of AMD, and Bob Swan Intel's current (soon to exit) CEO, but also executives and CEOs across Western Digital, IBM, Nvidia, Broadcom, and Qualcomm, among others. According to CRN , in representing those listed above the SIA are requesting funding, through investments and initiatives, to help bolster the semiconductor manufacturing and research industry. This kind of funding was already given the okay as part of a defence bill passed in January 2021, outlined in the CHIPS for America Act. Apparently it needs a little push, however. Over the past 31 years, the … [Read more...] about AMD, Nvidia, and Intel urge Biden to salvage the US chip industry
We could keep you here forever: Superhot explores the dark side of VR
You won't have to dig very deep inside the time-bending first-person shooter Superhot to find a ton of weird stuff. The game boots like a futuristic, VR-version of an early-90s IBM PC, complete with DOS-inspired loading bars, text, and the sound of a hard disk whirring away in the background. You can go right to the meat of it, chipping away at levels in which time only moves when you move, shooting crystalline enemies and watching them shatter into a million glorious pieces which hover in the air until you take your next step. Or you can poke around its folders looking for something else lurking in the digital shadows of this fake computer. Vote for Superhot in the Best Visual Design and Best Indie Game categories at the upcoming Golden Joystick Awards 2016 and claim three games for $1 / £1 for taking part. Strewn amongst the weird 'demoscene' programmer art and chatroom programs is a folder labelled 'Videos'. Inside that folder is a file labelled 'rsm.avi'. … [Read more...] about We could keep you here forever: Superhot explores the dark side of VR
Gamers have a lot to thank Dr. Mark Dean for, and the world’s first 1GHz chip is only the start
Where do you begin when talking with inventor, IBM Fellow, engineer, and professor Dr. Mark Dean? His work on the IBM PC, ISA system bus, and Color Graphics Adapter in the 1980s is surpassed only by the project he led in the early 2000s, breaking the 1GHz clock speed barrier with a chip for the first time. Dr. Mark Dean Dr. Mark Dean earned a BSEE degree from the University of Tennessee in 1979, where he would return as John Fischer Distinguished Professor later in life. He also has an MSEE degree from Florida Atlantic University (1982), and a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University (1992). In between all that he was breaking convention and working on cutting-edge technologies at IBM. Dean went on to become CTO of IBM Middle East and Africa, before shifting gears to achieve another lifelong goal of becoming a faculty member at a university, researching neuromorphic computing and advanced computer architectures at The University of Tennessee Knoxville, Tickle … [Read more...] about Gamers have a lot to thank Dr. Mark Dean for, and the world’s first 1GHz chip is only the start
