Transport management classic OpenTTD is coming to Steam

Management and business simulation game OpenTTD is coming to Steam in April, an expandable and beloved classic of the tycoon genre. In OpenTTD players run a transport business, moving passengers and cargo via water, rail, air, and road from place to place to develop a world and get rich. It first started in 2004 as an open-source remake of the 1995 game Transport Tycoon Deluxe and has been maintained and expanded ever since on account of its open-source nature and simple moddability.Prior to this release, OpenTTD was only available via its dedicated website.OpenTTD is a very well-regarded game among fans of transport and management tycoons, focusing on logistics and spatial placement on its square grid. Despite its simple appearance it's actually a rather complex simulation, with trains taking into account things like acceleration and torque as they move up slopes. It's also very simply moddable, with community-made extensions available in-game for new vehicles, industries, and … [Read more...] about Transport management classic OpenTTD is coming to Steam

Terraria Android development will continue despite Google spat, dev vows

Terraria developer Re-Logic has said it will still support its 2D sandbox hit on Android and Google Play, despite publicly canning the game's Stadia version yesterday due to grievances with Google.Re-Logic founder Andrew Spinks made headlines when he railed against Google on his personal Twitter and said he would never work with the company again.Spinks' own Google account had been disabled for three weeks with no explanation, he said, meaning he had lost access to his Google Play app library, Google Drive data, YouTube channel and Gmail account. "I absolutely have not done anything to violate your terms of service, so I can take this no other way than you deciding to burn this bridge," Spinks wrote. "Consider it burned. #Terraria for @GoogleStadia is cancelled. My company will no longer support any of your platforms moving forward."I will not be involved with a corporation that values their customers and partners so little. Doing business with you is a liability."Google is yet to … [Read more...] about Terraria Android development will continue despite Google spat, dev vows

Skater XL drops in with a brand new map in exclusive footage from Future Games Show

When Skater XL drops in on July 7, you'll get a chance to go back to school - Easy Day High School, that is. Developer Easy Day Studios showed off a brand-new map during the Future Games Show, just a month before the skating game debuts on PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. "This is a new level we've been working on for some time, and we're really excited to show it off today," studio head Dain Hedgpeth says. "This level is based on something that's really key to skateboarding, which is the California school environment." As you can see from the footage, it feels just like a Cali high school from every early aughts movie and skate video - sprawling concrete, strategically placed picnic tables, and rails on rails. "The pieces of the level are combinations of elements of things that we designed ourselves and also countless real-world spots," Hedgpeth explains. "There's probably about 50 real-world skate spots all from real high schools and real elementary schools that people … [Read more...] about Skater XL drops in with a brand new map in exclusive footage from Future Games Show

Everything you need to know about trains in Factorio

Choo-choo fellow Factorio train fans! Trains are a popular feature in any game (except perhaps FIFA), yet Factorio’s railways are an easily neglected aspect of Wube Software’s fantastically complex management sim. Primarily a method of transportation, they’re more intimidating to both manufacture and build compared to the more familiar transport belts. But a well-designed railway system can massively boost efficiency of your factory. Railways let you move huge amounts of resources far quicker than transport belts can, and can be deployed to boost areas where production is falling short. In this Factorio train guide, I’ll take you through how to manufacture and construct your railways, how to schedule stops, and the best ways to make use of your iron horse. So let’s fire up the boiler and get this freight on the move. How to build a Factorio train station Building a railway in Factorio can be complicated, but the complexity depends largely on what you want the railway to do. If … [Read more...] about Everything you need to know about trains in Factorio

8 games that did a terrible job predicting the future

The future is a tricky thing. Technology moves so fast, and the world is an increasingly unpredictable place. As such, it's tough to set ANY work of fiction in a believable future, let alone a video game that may take 3-4 years to create. Doesn't stop the game-makers trying, though. Sometimes it works eerily well, other times... um. The following eight games made a noble attempt to predict the future but, as time has now revealed, ultimately failed. Some harder than others. It's easy to sit here and mock (and not necessarily very kind) so I've looked really hard at each title to see if there are any elements they did predict. Metal Gear Solid 2 The year: 2007 The Metal Gear franchise has been set in the 'near future' since the original Metal Gear for MSX and NES, but when the series shifted to Solid it went from speculative to science fiction. It's very believable that mercenaries might band together to take over a small African nation (and in some cases, this is pretty … [Read more...] about 8 games that did a terrible job predicting the future
