Microsoft is trying something different to prevent Windows 10 updates from failing

If you've ever had a Windows 10 update fail to install through no direct fault of your own, good news—it shouldn't happen ever again, at least in theory. That's because Microsoft is making a key change to how it pushes out cumulative updates. More specifically, as spotted by BleepingComputer , Microsoft is bundling something called a servicing stack update (SSU) with regularly scheduled cumulative updates, starting with the one due out on March 9 (along with the partial preview I wrote about last week ). Cumulative updates and SSUs are two separate beasts, and up to this point, they have been doled out separately—the former on the second Tuesday of every month, otherwise known as Patch Tuesday, and the latter whenever Microsoft sees fit. Why does this matter? SSUs tweak the actual update component in Windows and can fix issues that might prevent a patch from installing on your PC. Part of the reason is Microsoft doesn't issue SSUs on a monthly basis, and that can be a … [Read more...] about Microsoft is trying something different to prevent Windows 10 updates from failing

New Superman movie will reportedly star a Black lead

The new Superman movie is reportedly planning on a Black actor for the titular role. When news broke that a new Superman film was in the works from Warner Bros., J.J. Abrams, and Ta-Nehisi Coates, it was unclear whether Henry Cavill would remain in the red cape or not. Thanks to a report from The Hollywood Reporter , it now seems clear that Cavill won't be the leading man in the next film, as the outlet "has confirmed that this new Superman project is aiming to star a Black Superman." As THR make clear, it's uncertain whether this will be Clark Kent, or another main character like Val-Zod or Calvin Ellis. Val-Zod is a friend of Kara Zor-El, better known as Supergirl in the main continuity – who has just been confirmed to appear in The Flash. Meanwhile, Calvin Ellis is both Superman and President of the United States in his universe. Both Val-Zod and Calvin Ellis exist in alternate universes to the main DC Earth. At the moment, though, nothing much is known about the … [Read more...] about New Superman movie will reportedly star a Black lead

WandaVision stylist confirms a Wolverine reference that no-one noticed

WandaVision included a Wolverine Easter egg that hardly anyone noticed, it has been revealed. In the Halloween-themed episode 6 which saw Wanda and Vision wear traditional, comic-accurate costumes (while their twins Billy and Tommy also resembled their superhero alter-egos ), Quicksilver rocked a hairstyle very similar to the one worn by Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, in a possible reference to Evan Peters' time in the Fox X-Men universe. Tricia Sawyer, makeup department head for the series, and Karen Bartek, hair department head, confirmed to Indie Wire that this comparison was in fact intentional. "It was something that Matt [Shakman, director] really [wanted]. They kind of planned that," Bartek commented, while Sawyer also confirmed that the intention was to mix the Fox and Marvel universes. Peters' version of Quicksilver in the MCU was the subject of much speculation, and it eventually turned out that Kathryn Hahn's Agatha Harkness was behind the new Pietro, as … [Read more...] about WandaVision stylist confirms a Wolverine reference that no-one noticed

Someone has figured out how to reduce GTA Online’s load times by almost 70%

Grand Theft Auto 5 's loading times have been the butt of many a joke over the last seven years—even the beefiest of PCs will leave players twiddling their thumbs while that blonde lady throws a peace sign at her phone for the millionth time. The agonising wait has led one savvy player to delve into the game's code, and with some tweaking has managed to reduce the loading times by almost 70%. GitHub user tostercx has uploaded the fixed code , though they do warn that it's more of a proof of concept and not intended for casual use. They were also kind enough to provide a breakdown of the entire process . The lengthy loading times—tostercx experienced a six minute wait for GTA Online to boot up—are, in part, attributed to some terribly optimised code and a 10MB JSON file containing 63,000 item entries. Every time an item is found, the check then runs again… and again. tostercx estimated that this leads to around 1,984,531,500 checks. This, along with the fact the game was … [Read more...] about Someone has figured out how to reduce GTA Online’s load times by almost 70%

Destiny 2’s Trials of Osiris mode has been disabled because of a match fixing ring

Destiny 2 's competitive PVP mode, Trials Of Osiris, has been put on hold once more, after a community effort found a way to farm free flawless cards—reaching seven wins without taking a loss—using a mix of character-switching, dice-rolls, and a good old fashioned secret code. The exploit is explained above by YouTuber Lunarated, who noticed that he was getting a lot of free wins against fireteams using the Hakke emblem. A little bit of digging later, and it became clear that there was a massive community exploit going on in the China/Hong Kong region, using Hakke banners as a signifier that you were involved in a widespread match-fixing ring. Here's how it works. A team of three queues for Trials using burner characters, with two members using Hakke emblems to communicate intent. If you queue against another team using normal emblems, back out—you don't care about eating a loss on this character, so you can take the hit. Things get interesting when you match against … [Read more...] about Destiny 2’s Trials of Osiris mode has been disabled because of a match fixing ring
