Almost immediately after Disney resurrected the Lucasfilm Games brand as the official home of Star Wars games, signaling the coming end of Electronic Arts' exclusivity deal, Ubisoft revealed that it was working on a new open-world Star Wars game , headed up by its Massive Entertainment studio. It's a pretty big deal—you might say it gives us new hope for Star Wars games. Earlier this week, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said that even though its Massive studio is now developing a new open-world Star Wars game, it will also continue to work on its other open-world shooter series, The Division. "The Massive studio is a large studio, and they are also collaborating with lots of studios all over the world," he told analysts in a quarterly financial call. "You're going to see more on The Division in this year and the year after." Today the studio officially committed to that promise, saying in a message on Twitter that the recently-released title update 12 for The Division 2 was intended to be the game's final major update, "but thanks to your continued support, we are now in the early stages of development for fresh content to release later in 2021." Ubisoft has confirmed more The Division 2 content is now in the works for 2021. Title Update 12, which came out in December 2020 and kicked off The Division 2's fourth season, was meant to be the last for the game. But Ubisoft has had a rethink. "Today, we are thrilled to confirm that there will be additional content for The Division 2 released later this year!" reads a post on The Division 2 subreddit from the development team. "It is your continuous passion and support which enables us to continue to build upon The Division 2 experience, and we cannot thank you enough for that." Players had assumed The Division 2's fourth Season, dubbed End of Watch, would be its last. Ubisoft announced today that The Division 2 is getting more new content sometime in 2021, despite earlier plans to stop delivering updates after Title Update 12. The beefy Title Update 12 launched in December , ushering in Season 4 of the Warlords of New York expansion and adding a ton of new stuff, particularly for players with the latest DLC. Most of us assumed that would be the last major content update for The Division 2, and how could you blame us? Developer Ubisoft Massive itself called Season 4 the "End of Watch" update, and since it seemed the studio had its hands full with its ambitious new Star Wars game , it was sure looking like The Division 2 was in its twilight years. The Division 2 released back in 2019 and despite improving nearly everything compared to the first game, including combat, mission structure, and progression, the game underperformed for Ubisoft. However, dedicated players have continued supporting it, and this support has convinced Ubisoft to continue developing new content for 2021.
