There are shooting games, and there are shooting games. Irem's 1987 R-Type can't exactly claim to be the first of its kind, and you could well argue there are more widely acclaimed shooting games, but you'd be hard pushed to find any as iconic as this stately sci-fi venture. Cold, composed and challenging, it's the archetypal 80s shooter, and a prime example of the genre in its pomp. The popularity of shooting games would wane throughout the 90s, however, and by the turn of the century those in charge of the series wondered whether it had a future at all. Which explains the brilliantly fatalistic air that hangs over R-Type Final, the 2004 entry that was imagined as a full-stop for the series. R-Type Final lead designer Kazuma Kujo has since discovered there's life yet in the series, though. The veteran of Nazca, Irem and now Granzella - the studio where many Irem alumni ended when the company moved away from video games - now finds himself heading up development of a sequel, … [Read more...] about How the grand dame of shooting games is making its return

R-Type Final retrospective
The R-Type series needs little introduction. From its stunning arcade debut in 1987, R-Type captured the hearts and minds of a generation by combining novel mechanics with a distinctive Giger-inspired biomechanical aesthetic. A grand sense of spectacle was matched by a challenge equally imposing, and although reliant on the learn-by-rote methodology that underpinned all shmups of the day, Irem's craftsmanship created a horizontal journey with a unique imagination. 26 years later, R-Type's Force and charge shot still feels like a genius twist on the genre's norms. Bolstered by its uniqueness and wild success, the R-Type concept blossomed into a fine run of sequels. With the 1998 release of R-Type Delta, the series marked its first decade with a bravura entry that demonstrated precisely why true icons are timeless, proving that its template could sing in polygons just as well as it could in bitmaps. However, all good things must come to an end. In a unique and emotionally affecting … [Read more...] about R-Type Final retrospective
Project Triangle Strategy demo is promising for those who loved Fire Emblem: Three Houses
As a longtime Fire Emblem fan, I can't help but be drawn to Project Triangle Strategy (lacklustre working title aside). After playing Fire Emblem: Three Houses to death back in 2019, I'm more than ready for a new strategy-based adventure and Square Enix's upcoming RPG seems to fit that bill perfectly. As the second game in Square Enix's HD-2D series, the delightful sprite style seen in Octopath Traveler makes a comeback, and brings to mind the old school vibes of classic strategy games that landed on the Game Boy Advance so many years ago, like Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones and Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. After seeing a brief glimpse of Project Triangle Strategy in the most recent Nintendo Direct , I was all too keen to jump right in and check it out for myself. I've since played through the demo a few times, and I've already found a lot to love about Square Enix's strategy RPG… but there are some aspects that give me a moment's pause. Still, whether you're a Fire Emblem … [Read more...] about Project Triangle Strategy demo is promising for those who loved Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Ex-Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 studio suffers lay-offs
Employees at Hardsuit Labs, the former developer of Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2, have been hit by a round of layoffs. Numerous staff members, including many from the studio's narrative team, announced they had lost their jobs overnight. The development comes just a week after publisher Paradox pulled development of the game from Hardsuit Labs , delayed the release indefinitely and cancelled new pre-orders. One staff member affected by the layoffs suggested the entirety of the studio's narrative team had been let go. Another employee appeared to confirm this, stating "many others" had also been affected. Hardsuit Labs is yet to acknowledge the layoffs, and the total number of people impacted is so far unclear. Bloodlines 2 had suffered a troubled development and multiple delays. "Organisational changes" were announced as part of a shake-up in August 2020, which led to the project's lead writer and creative director being fired . Senior narrative designer Cara … [Read more...] about Ex-Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 studio suffers lay-offs
