Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain review

September 1, 2015 by

Hideo Kojima's farewell to Metal Gear Solid is a dream: the best ever stealth game, and the high point of a remarkable series. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is a dream game. It's the kind of game that, in 1987, the young designer of the 8-bit Metal Gear may have dreamed would one day be possible. It's the kind of game that players like me dream of: an enormous and deep and seemingly endless experience that's worth the investment and then some. It's the kind of game where every hand-polished element slots together into a head-spinningly ambitious structure and they combine into something you can only call visionary.Metal Gear Solid 5 transplants the stealth core of the series from linear environments into large open worlds, banking everything on great enemy AI and numerous moving parts that allow players freedom of approach in any given situation. The idea is not a completely new one to Metal Gear Solid. Since Metal Gear Solid 3, Kojima Productions has been … [Read more...] about Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain review

Learning the ancient language of Heaven’s Vault

March 23, 2018 by

Home • 4 Lingo a little longer Brendan Caldwell List Goblin 23rd March 2018 / 5:00PM “That’s the Ancient word for ‘writer’,” says Jon Ingold, pointing to some indecipherable symbols on his business card. “What it breaks down to is ‘Person-who-speaks-without-speaking.’” Ingold is the writer for Heaven’s Vault, an upcoming sci-fi adventure from Inkle (the folks behind 80 Days and Sorcery!) You play an archaeologist investigating the remains of an ancient civilisation in an otherworldly “Nebula”. He and some others from Inkle Studios have been watching me waddle around a garden of strange monuments, trying to discern meaning from the faded words I find carved into trees, walls, rocks and reliefs. In creating this game, they’ve constructed a fictional language of over 1000 words. They’re so proud of this new language, they’ve even used it on their business cards. Ingold examines a … [Read more...] about Learning the ancient language of Heaven’s Vault

Mark Hamill remembers meeting Carrie Fisher for the first time (and wearing her clothes)

January 3, 2017 by

Friends, family, and fans have been memorializing and paying tribute to Carrie Fisher since the actress, age 60, passed away on December 27. This week, co-star and friend Mark Hamill shared a guest column in The Hollywood Reporter, calling out Fisher's softer side and sense of humor. It's well worth a read in full, but if losing Princess Leia has brought you down, maybe it'll help to hear that being her friend was something Hamill considered "an honor.""The first time I met Carrie was at dinner in London before we started filming together. … You know, she was 19 years old at the time. I was a worldly 24. So I was thinking, 'Oh my God, it’ll be like working with a high school kid.' But I was just bowled over. I mean she was just so instantly ingratiating and funny and outspoken. She had a way of just being so brutally candid. I’d just met her but it was like talking to a person you’d known for 10 years.""She was telling me stuff about her stepfather, about her … [Read more...] about Mark Hamill remembers meeting Carrie Fisher for the first time (and wearing her clothes)
