Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun review
A winning premise of cleverly combined genres let down by a series of irritating design issues. There's not much more satisfying than seeing a good team come together, something Shadow Tactics developer Mimimi no doubt understands. Shadow Tactics is a strategy/stealth hybrid set in feudal Japan that follows in the footsteps of the long lost but fondly remembered Commandos games. Players issue commands to five different characters, each with their own unique talents. Your bulky samurai can slay three opponents clustered together and carry two cadavers at once, your elderly peg-legged sniper whittles away the opposition from afar, your crafty orphan plants traps, your all-rounder soldier throws a mean shuriken, and your seductress gets dolled up in disguises to distract guards. Each hero is fairly limited on their own, but together they form quite the team. As a result, Shadow Tactics doesn't feel like anything else out there. It's slower and more meticulous than most … [Read more...] about Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun review
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare’s campaign is slick, morbid and a bit dull
Editor's note: Ahead of our full review next week after we've had time to get to grips with the game's online component, here are Edwin's impressions of the single-player campaign. Among the first things you do in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is walk through a memorial, running your eyes over marble slabs engraved with the names of the fallen. As I later discovered, the soldiers so remembered are in fact Infinity Ward employees - senior animator Dustin Kimmich, character artist Sylvia Miller and art director Brian Horton among others. Playing footage of the scene back, I couldn't help but think of those "dearly departed" souls the artists had neglected to include. Studio co-founders Vince Zampella and Jason West, to name a couple off the top of my head. Steve Fukuda, lead designer of the very first Call of Duty back in 2003. Mohammad Alavi, the incorrigible dabbler behind the legendary "Crew Expendable" and "No Russian" missions. If these former staffers are absent from the … [Read more...] about Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare’s campaign is slick, morbid and a bit dull

Godzilla vs. Kong: The making of a monster hit
This feature first appeared in the March 2021 issue of Total Film magazine, featuring Godzilla vs. Kong on the cover. Pick up a hard issue here . When Total Film catches up with Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard in February 2021, his long-awaited crossover grudge-match movie is "100 percent done". All he has left to do is sign off IMAX and Dolby Vision 3D versions. This film has been a long time coming, and not just because it’s the culmination of a MonsterVerse arc that began with 2014’s Godzilla reboot, and continued through 2017’s Kong: Skull Island and 2019’s Godzilla sequel, King of the Monsters . After a couple of release-date postponements, Godzilla vs. Kong is almost upon us, with a US release in March, where it’ll land on cinema screens as well as streaming for HBO Max subscribers. For Wingard, this post-production phase hasn’t been too badly disrupted by the pandemic that’s obliterated cinema schedules. "We had our first test screening at the end … [Read more...] about Godzilla vs. Kong: The making of a monster hit
