The Total War series has been going strong since the year 2000, and since then has accrued at least 13 titles in the main series alone. In a few days, the upcoming entry in the series, Total War: Three Kingdoms, promises to be a big shake-up to the formula, which has sold pretty solidly for nearly 2 decades. Just how are they going to achieve this? Well, so far it seems like the main shift in focus has been towards characters being a more integral driving force of the story and the gameplay.Total War: Three Kingdoms Heroes Are at the Forefront In previous Total War titles, the heroes have been little more than figureheads for your armies. While they certainly had personalities and those personalities affected the narrative, they didn’t really affect the gameplay all that much. For Total War: Three Kingdoms, the developers have made heroes, and their relationships and personalities, integral to playing the game. Firstly, you don’t pick a faction this time, you simply pick a … [Read more...] about What’s New In Total War: Three Kingdoms?

Anyone that purchased a PS4 last year for the sweet exclusives knows that the platform emphasized on single player games. Regarding that, Shawn Layden spoke out about his plans with the PS5. He specifically mentioned PlayStation 5 multiplayer games, exclusives that were lacking in the PS4’s run. Worldwide Studios, like I say, we’ve been going really heavy into story-driven gaming. The power of the narrative. Big, spectacular experiences. But not a whole lot in the multiplayer side of things, I think. That’s an area where you will likely see us start to make more noise in the new term. This is contrary to what Sony had said about the next chapter of cinematic storytelling. The emphasis on single player games is definitely still there, but Sony would also like to cover for its multiplayer drawbacks. The multiplayer side of gaming is definitely more profitable in comparison. Especially considering that it’s more sustainable and long-lasting. A good … [Read more...] about Sony To Slightly Shift Its Focus Towards Multiplayer Games For PlayStation 5
The house of Final Fantasy is seeing less than stellar results in 2018. In a recently published financial report published, Square Enix shared large financial losses totaling $33 million. These range for the half year ending on September 30. This includes the release of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Switch exclusive RPG Octopath Traveler and Life is Strange 2. Rather than blaming any of its releases for the loss, the company has pointed to a shift in priorities for Luminous Productions, which opened earlier this year. Luminous Productions’ staff consists of a good portion of the Final Fantasy XV team. Their original goal was to create AAA experiences and “other entertainment content.” In today’s statement, Square reaffirmed that the studio was focusing on a future AAA games title. This means that the “other content” may have been dropped after a reevaluation. Final Fantasy XV famously had a prequel … [Read more...] about Square Enix Suffers Massive Losses Due to Shift of Focus for Luminous Productions

In the world of game development, Hisashi Koinuma is a bit of an anomaly. Even after five years as the president of Koei Tecmo, Koinuma still finds himself with “producer” credits on many of its games. He splits his time between the two roles (and others) at a point when most would abandon the day-to-day work on games like the latest Dynasty Warriors — or as the case may be, Attack on Titan 2, out today. Koinuma’s journey started when he took a job as a programmer in 1994, eventually shifting to a production role, and then president in 2013. Nowadays, Koinuma uses his background to do what few video game executives might, and takes a far more active role than might be expected of a businessman, for better or worse. Koinuma says he’s always been someone eager to share his knowledge of games, even if his role didn’t necessarily call for it. His first exposure to the power of the medium and how it functioned was during a stint working at an arcade while … [Read more...] about Why Koei Tecmo’s president still works in the trenches
