What would the game be like? Nausicaas adventures--like chasing giant bugs on her jet hang glider--are fantastical enough for a game, but theyre also grounded in very human emotions and desires. Its the type of tale that makes a great RPG, since that genre can tell enormous narratives while simultaneously showcasing wonderfully realized worlds. And the film only told a fraction of the story Miyazaki detailed in the Nausicaa manga series; the full saga is easily rich enough for a satisfying 60 hour JRPG. Wed also give the project to Mistwalker, the company run by Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi. Why? Because the tone and style of FF has so much in common with Nausicaa, its only fitting that Sakaguchis current team work on the game. … [Read more...] about What 10 Ghibli films would be like as games

Halo on the Atari, and 7 other impressive demakes
Invented by fans for the granddaddy of Flash gaming, Newgrounds, Greek & Wicked takes the Hydra boss battle that opened up the first GoW and makes it as lo-fi as possible. The characters may be flat silhouettes, and the noise beeps n boops, but its still a faithful recreation, right down to the QTE conclusion. And just like in classic Game & Watch releases, you can beat Greek & Wicked in minutes, and are expected to repeat it endlessly until your character dies. Truly, this version of Kratos is worthy of G&Ws legacy. … [Read more...] about Halo on the Atari, and 7 other impressive demakes
One game, two versions, and not a Pokemon in sight
Bomberman Max: Blue Champion and Red ChallengerWhen most people think of Bomberman, they envision some chaotic multiplayer full of frantic explosive-dropping, devious traps, and death by self-detonation. But there's an entire line of handheld Bomberman games that take Hudson Soft's mouthless demolition man and set him in a series of single-player dungeons. And in Bomberman Max for Game Boy Color, the version you buy determines whether you play as Bomberman (Blue) or his rival Max (Red), a Protoman-esque frenemy sporting a cape and an insect-like helmet. Both have access to different Charaboms (i.e. Pokemon), Bomberman tosses fire bombs while Max uses electricity bombs, and linking up the two versions makes it much, much easier to score the good ending. If you don't have a pal with the opposite version, you'll need to finish every single stage if you're hoping to bypass the shame and emptiness of the bad finale screen: the question "END?" in giant lettering alongside a shot of your … [Read more...] about One game, two versions, and not a Pokemon in sight

But no matter how tough they are, enemies are largely just cannon fodder--it's those bad guys who can kill you with one measly hit that stick in your mind and create a grudge. … [Read more...] about 11 video game enemies who can down you with one hit
The Skyrim mod to Enderal
As an isolated continent, you learn early on that Enderal has narrowly escaped tangential civil war but that a 'Red Madness' sweeps its populace, causing otherwise friendly folk to turn against one another in brutal fashion. This in turn forces a magic-related fever and strange dream-like auguries upon our protagonist, within which we learn that the theocratic Order of Enderal might be behind these dodgy events. And so sets the scene for your hero's fantastical journey - one which involves sussing out this seemingly unscrupulous church-state, eradicating your potentially fatal delirium, and putting a stop to the dreadful plague. … [Read more...] about The Skyrim mod to Enderal
