Boneworks brings an unprecedented sense of realism to VR
Until I played Boneworks, I never knew how much fun the simple act of gripping and holding something was (get your mind out of the gutter, you!). Holding and gripping things is something we do every day; from this morning's coffee cup to the mobile phone you might be reading this article on. Gripping and holding objects is second nature to most of us and as such it's not really something that the average person would stop their day to think about. When it comes to VR games though, the act of gripping and holding objects is often simplified compared to real life. Normally, the item will teleport to your hands when you reach out to grab it and then it'll sit there, locked into the exact place the game's designers wants it to be. Not so with Boneworks though. Items will still fly to your hands Force Pull style if you reach at them from a distance but after that? Well things change in a way that makes Boneworks one of the most realistic feeling VR games I've ever played. You see, Boneworks … [Read more...] about Boneworks brings an unprecedented sense of realism to VR
The origins of the walking simulator
If there's a genre of videogames today that diversifies players like no other, it's the walking simulator. Many examples have found favour, especially at Eurogamer, with Firewatch and, latterly, Virginia, both well-received. Yet for every praiseworthy voice, there are critics, keen to expose this style of game for being over-hyped, underwhelming and, frankly, boring. Like so much else in games, the walking simulator is not a new phenomenon, and its roots can be traced back to the 1980s. In a decade that saw its fair share of innovation, mixed with rampant cloning and bandwagon-jumping, freelance developer (ie bedroom coder) Graham Relf came up with the idea of a purely explorative game, a procedurally-generated terrain and countless locations to visit and search. Explorer had a suitably apt title but, despite its technological achievement, it was met with indifference in the gaming press of the time. However, Explorer's, and its author's, story began 15 or so years earlier. … [Read more...] about The origins of the walking simulator
Shadow of War developer discusses the game’s controversial loot boxes
Last month, big budget Lord of the Rings game Middle-earth: Shadow of War revealed it would supplement its full-fat price-tag by including loot boxes purchasable with real-world money. It was an announcement which, predictably, did not go down well with fans. The single-player action adventure has an in-game store, called the Market, that sells orcs and other items for use in the game's Nemesis System. You can also buy loot chests, war chests, XP boosts and bundles. The loot chests contain gear (weapons and armour) of varying rarity. They can also contain XP boosts which, as you'd expect, help level up playable character Talion faster. War chests provide orc followers of varying rarity which you can use to help create a strong army. They can also contain training orders to level up and customise orc followers.Publisher Warner Bros. accompanied the announcement with reassurances - that anything gained from the loot boxes could also be earned by simply playing the game, that the … [Read more...] about Shadow of War developer discusses the game’s controversial loot boxes
Crisis on Infinite Earths Comic Book Tie-In Kills a Major Arrowverse Character
By Russ Burlingame - December 15, 2019 10:00 am EST Share 0 Comments 0 The CW's "Crisis on Infinite Earths" is on hiatus for almost another month, but that doesn't mean fans don't have anything to fill the universe-annihiliating hole in their lives. Today, Walmart stores in the U.S. finally got the Crisis on Infinite Earths 100-Page Giant #1 -- and to the surprise of everyone reading it, there is actually what appears to be a major Arrowverse death which takes place within its pages. That's important, since the comic is at least theoretically canonical to the Arrowverse TV shows. There is also a character -- The Ray, from Earth-X -- who was seemingly killed on TV, who we learn was saved from annihilation at the last moment so that he can take part in The Monitor's plan to save the multiverse. In case you couldn't tell by the headline and first paragraph, this is going to be a pretty spoiler-filled breakdown of a key plot element in Crisis on Infinite Earths … [Read more...] about Crisis on Infinite Earths Comic Book Tie-In Kills a Major Arrowverse Character
