Acclaimed Dev Vlambeer Is Surprise Shutting Down On Its 10-Year Anniversary
After 10 years, Dutch independent studio Vlambeer has closed its doors. Despite the surprise shuttering, the studio's last game, Ultrabugs , is still on the way. "Today marks Vlambeer's 10th anniversary, which is way longer than we could've ever imagined," the studio tweeted. "We had a beautiful run, made incredible games, and worked with amazing people, but it's time for new things. So we're announcing the end of Vlambeer." Vlambeer didn't specify what "new things" are coming for co-founders Jan Willem Nijma and Rami Ismail. Vlambeer promised that Ultrabugs is "still coming out" and said it's investigating other options for "further support for some of our earlier games," but nothing has been solidified yet. Blizzard may hire World of StarCraft man
StarCraft II modder Ryan Winzen's life may be about to turn upside down: Blizzard has told Eurogamer it will consider offering him a job – if he's good enough. His creation, World of StarCraft, puts the assets of StarCraft II into a World of Warcraft mould. A gameplay video shows a character selection screen as the demonstrator flicks through the available class options. The footage also shows a group battling monsters in the StarCraft II world. Action is third-person, as in WOW, and the requisite health bars and skill bars of an MMO user interface are present. A YouTube video showcasing the mod, which you can see below, was slapped with a cease and desist order from Activision Blizzard after it went viral. But it was all a misunderstanding. Blizzard revealed it was happy for the mod to live on with the name changed to StarCraft Universe. It turned out Blizzard owned the trademark to World of StarCraft . Who knew? Now Winzen, who will soon meet with the StarCraft II team at … [Read more...] about Blizzard may hire World of StarCraft man
Shin Megami Tensei 3 is awesome, but deserves more than a barebones PC port
This is a pretty big deal. Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne is another long overdue remaster and PC port of a cult classic from Atlus, coming less than a year after the success of Persona 4 Golden's PC success . So what is Shin Megami Tensei 3, and why should you be excited? I had the same question going in. I'm a longtime PC player and didn't own a console until late into my teens, so I missed out on all the JRPGs of the '90s and '00s. Even among JRPG players, Shin Megami Tensei isn't as well known as Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest: it's a series of odd, profane, and punishing adventures that alienate even genre fans. But after a few hours with the upcoming PC remaster I'm all in on this strange, horny, Satanic artifact from 2003, despite some major shortcomings in the graphics and display options. It's a disappointing port Update: An Atlus rep confirmed the framerate is intentionally locked at 30. The biggest bummer and banner caveat here: I'm hitting a 30 fps ceiling. The Call of Duty: Warzone zombies containment event has been a slow, confusing farewell party for Verdansk as we know it
Verdansk is one of the few video game apocalypses where turning into a zombie isn't so much an ever-present danger as it is an optional lifestyle choice. Right now, the players who stalk the battlefield of Call of Duty: Warzone as the undead are doing so intentionally, having entered one of the map's increasing number of Corruption Zones and succumbed to the gas, only to rise again as a wheezing husk of flesh and bone. It's quite easy to avoid dying in these zones, at least right now, and you won't be demoted to zombie status if you die in any other manner – even if killed by another zombie, as was the case in Warzone's Haunting of Verdansk event last Halloween. No, players are becoming one with the horde as a deliberate act of terror, either to simply enjoy the heightened athleticism that comes with zombification, or griefing players with surprise encounters from above. It lends a strange dynamic to Warzone's PvP battle royale as we near the end of season 2, with more … [Read more...] about The Call of Duty: Warzone zombies containment event has been a slow, confusing farewell party for Verdansk as we know it
